We backtested 30 popular bot configurations across 3 market cycles. The conclusion is uncomfortable for anyone selling bot subscriptions: the majority underperform a simple buy-and-hold strategy on Bitcoin.
The appeal of trading bots is obvious: automated execution, no emotions, 24/7 operation. The reality is less glamorous. We tested 30 bot configurations — DCA bots, grid bots, and signal-following bots — from platforms like 3Commas and Cryptohopper — across the 2021 bull run, 2022 bear market, and 2023-2024 recovery.
The Results
Of 30 bot configurations tested across all three periods, 22 underperformed a simple Bitcoin buy-and-hold strategy. The 8 that outperformed were exclusively DCA bots running during the bear market — where buying at regular intervals in a downtrend naturally accumulates at lower prices.
In the bull market phase, zero bots outperformed buy-and-hold. Not one. The reason: bots trade at predetermined thresholds, taking profits on the way up. In a sustained uptrend, every profit-take is a missed opportunity. Buy-and-hold captures the full move.
When Bots Work
Bots outperform in one specific scenario: range-bound markets with clear support and resistance. Grid bots excel here because they're designed to buy at support and sell at resistance repeatedly. But the crypto market spends relatively little time in clean ranges — it tends to trend aggressively in one direction or the other.
The other scenario where bots add value is DCA during drawdowns — but that's not really a bot strategy, it's a dollar-cost averaging strategy that happens to be automated. See our methodology for how we evaluate bot platforms versus human signal providers.
The Real Question
If you're considering a crypto trading bot, ask yourself: am I trying to beat buy-and-hold, or am I trying to reduce drawdown risk? If the former, the data says you probably won't. If the latter, a DCA bot with sensible parameters is a reasonable tool — but it's doing the same thing as a scheduled recurring buy on your exchange.
For traders seeking genuine alpha over buy-and-hold, a human operator with verified judgment — like the top providers in our rankings — is more likely to deliver it than an algorithm operating on fixed rules.
